Knowing - 1 frown

Despite its opening week box office, “Knowing” is going to die a quiet death because of word of mouth. This isn’t the kind of movie people will urge their friends to see. The plot is ridiculous, implausible and full of holes and Nicholas Cage’s acting is mediocre and laughable. And that’s from a Nic Cage fan although I have to wonder about his script selection criteria. Remember "Bangkok Dangerous"?

The plot includes aliens, prescient children, and a solar flare that destroys life as we know it on Earth. Why would you want to spend 2 hours watching Cage’s astrophysicist character decipher a cryptic list of numbers if he’s unable to save the world? And who are those aliens? What does the black pebble have to do with anything? ...... Do we really care? No matter how intriguing the plot may sound, the downer of an ending is so disappointing that you feel cheated. Skip “Knowing” and keep your blood pressure at an acceptable level. 3/20/09

Nicolas Cage is a major disappointment to me as an actor. Here is a guy with tons of talent and should be a top quality performer. Unforunately he has become the "B" movie king with "A" movie ability. Somewhere along the way he made a decision that it is easier to float along making "junk" pictures (i.e. Bankok Dangerous, Ghost Rider, Lord of War etc)with a minimum of effort and make a few bucks instead of being on top of his craft! Too bad!!

Cage has many critics. For example in a recent quote "Cage has his detractors. Cage is often criticized for choosing to star in big-budget action-adventure flicks and thrillers. Many feel that, in recent years, he has abandoned altogether any desire to star in smaller character-driven dramas, the type of film that garnered him praise to begin with. For example, Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman wrote an article[13] accusing Cage of such 'selling out' in March 2009, after the debut of his film "Knowing". In the article, titled "Nicolas Cage: Artist or hack? The choice is his", Gleiberman calls Cage out to return to dramas as opposed to high-paying blockbusters".
